OHARA CONTAINERS:  DESCRIPTION OF THE BASIC CONTAINERS 
USED BY OHARA SCHOOL PRACTITIONERS

BUNJIN
~ a tall container with narrow base, widening body, narrow neck, and slightly wide rim, in the style of ancient Chinese
          vases; sometimes with pictorial decoration; more often in a celadon or pale blue glaze

COMPOTE / PEDESTAL VASE
~ a container with a foot usually 4" to 10" high, a bowl from 5" to 10" wide, and sides 2 1/4" to
          3" high

HANA MAI
~ a narrow, long, rectangular container, usually 4" to 6" wide and 16" to 23" long, with sides 2 1/4" to 2 3/4" high; variations include:
  • one end 3 1/2" to 5" and the other 5" to 7" high with sides swooping between them
  • a crescent shape not as wide as a rimpa
  • a wave or open "S" shape
  • multiple containers in a free form or abstract shape
HEIKA ~ a tall narrow container, usually 12" to 14" though can be taller, usually with a narrowed mouth

HIBIKI ~ a haika with a base that flares out, then in; small "ears" on either side near the rim; sometimes set in a madoka

MADOKA a suiban with sides that angle out, then in; with 1/2" feet

MORIBANA ~ (a) a medium-sized oval container with sides 2 1/4" to 2 3/4" high; with an oval foot 1/2" high that has openings
           at the half-way point on one side and the 3/4 point on the other side; (b) synonym for suiban

RIMPA ~ a large, narrow, shallow, fan-shaped or rectangular container, usually 5" to 7" wide and 16" to 24" long, with walls
          2 1/4" to 2 3/4" high; usually used in pairs or trios

SUIBAN ~ (a) general term for a large, shallow, circular or oval container, usually 12" to 16" in diameter though can be larger,
          with straight or slightly angled-in sides from 2 1/4" to 2 3/4" high; with or without ripples in the base, a "dimple" in the
          side to offset the circularity, and/or 1/2" feet; (b) synonym for moribana

     NEW SUIBAN ~ a suiban 8" to 10" in diameter, sometimes with taller sides, sometimes with sides that angle in; without feet
 
     HALF-CIRCULAR SUIBAN ~ a half-circle shaped suiban 10" in diameter, with a half-circular foot 1 1/2" high; usually used in
           pairs

     HALF-"DOUGHNUT" SUIBAN ~ a half-circular suiban with a small half-circle cut out of the straight side; the foot is only 1/2"
